Class 5a: Literature & Critical Thinking MEET TOM SAWYER – a kind-hearted but naughty boy!
Currently, Class 5a are studying a picture book version of the 1876 classic American children’s novel – “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain. Set in the 1840s (about 180 years ago!), the story which takes place in Missouri, by the Mississippi river in a small town called St. Petersburg, is about an 11 year-old, free-spirited but cheeky boy, raised by his often frustrated and furious Aunt Polly.
Tom’s wild imagination fuels his sense of adventure, which in turn worries his Aunt who loves Tom with all her heart, and tries very hard to guide him down the correct path. But it is not so easy, as Tom’s mischievousness nature means he is frequently in trouble, assisted by his best friend, Huckleberry Finn, an orphan who has no family to teach him right from wrong. Together they see and experience many events beyond their years.
